Most of us will have had periods in our lives when we feel stuck or feel overwhelmed by a situation.
But although time has moved on, you can still feel stuck. Overthinking causes you to feel paralyzed by the negative thoughts that are going around in your head.
Your physical, mental and emotional energies can sometimes feel stagnated and as a result, you may:-
- not be able to think straight
- feel physically and mentally exhausted
- feel emotional, unstable or tearful
Or all of the above and almost always at an inappropriate and unexpected time.
Life goes on, so you try ignoring these feelings by suppressing them; knowing that they’re not going to go away by themselves. Then there comes a time when you don’t want to continue feeling like this. You’ve decided that you want to shift the feelings and stop overthinking, but you’re not sure how to do this.
Feeling stuck can happen when you’re constantly overthinking and focusing on how things should or could be different or better than they are. You can’t change the past, but you can influence the future. By recognising this and acknowledging your feelings, you can start to work out a plan and take positive actions to address and shake-off these feelings that are causing you to feel stuck.
Here are 3 things you can do
1. Find a chat-buddy
It’s good to talk. Talking to a friend, a family member or a therapist will help you to share and release your negative thoughts and feelings. This will stop them from continually going around in your mind and slow down if not stop you from overthinking. Sharing how you feel with someone else who is a good listener will help you to make sense of your thoughts and put them into perspective. Choose a chat buddy who has a positive, uplifting attitude. They may have experienced something similar and have some good advice for you too.
2. Move your body
When you exercise, your brain releases hormones called serotonin. Serotonin is a naturally created chemical that relieves stress and creates positive feelings. So, get your body moving and generate some feel-good hormones. Go for a brisk walk (preferably in nature), to the gym, for a run or do jumping-jacks in the living room!
3. Move your mind
Your thoughts create your reality. Constant negative thoughts lead to having negative feelings. Positive thoughts lead to positive feelings about you and your world. Start observing your thoughts and what you’re feeding your mind through books, TV programmes, conversations with friends etc. Ask yourself: –
- “Are these thoughts true for me?”
- “Are these books, magazines, newspapers or TV programmes serving me well?”
- “Are these conversations raising my vibration?”.
If the answer is no, then move your thoughts onto things that do raise your vibration.
4. Start Journalling
A journal is a good tool to use daily to record: –
- things you are grateful for
- some positive statements or affirmations
- anything that makes you feel good about yourself
